13 Important Tasks and Settings After Installing WordPress

So, you have joined with millions who do blogging with passion using WordPress? Installing WordPress is an easy task and optimizing it to our needs and do settings matter a lot. After installing WordPress we need to do some settings, install plugins and change the theme. This is to make it perform well. In this article we will discuss about the essential settings that should be after installing WordPress. Ensure you have done these settings before publishing articles. This article is not focused on the essential plugins we should have, security tips or any advance customization of WordPress. But, it tells you the fundamental settings that are to be done after installing WordPress. I have already posted an article on how to install WordPress on HostGator shared hosting platform. You might refer it if you haven’t installed the WordPress.


Important Settings After Installing WordPress

1. Uninstall Unwanted Plugins

When we install WordPress, we get some plugins along with it. If you install it using a quick install feature provided by your hosting providers, they might install their own plugins too. Sometimes we don’t need them. As I installed WordPress on HostGator, it comes with three active plugins by default. They are Jetpack, Mojo Market Place and WordPress Super Cache. I felt only WordPress Super Cache is useful. So, I uninstalled other plugins. Similarly, you have to uninstall and delete the unwanted or unused ones.

On the sidebar of your admin control panel go to Plugins –> Installed Plugins.View Installed Plugins

You will get the available plugins list. Select the plugins you don’t like, choose the Deactivate option in the drop-down list and click on Apply button.deactivate unwanted plugins

You have to completely remove those plugins to cleanup plugin files. After deactivation select those plugins, choose the Delete option in the drop-down list and click on Apply button.delete unwanted plugins

You will be asked to confirm your action. Do it as given in the image below.delete plugin files

Also notice that the Hello Dolly plugin is of no use. So, delete it too.

2. Install Your Theme and Delete Unwanted Themes

You have to choose a perfect theme for your blog after installing WordPress. Pro themes are always best. So, I suggest you to purchase a professional theme from a premium WordPress themes provider like Mythemeshop. WordPress has some themes by default. Having these themes will increase the usage of server resources as we have to update them. So delete everything except the one you use.

Themes can be found in the section Appearance –> Themes. Activate a theme you want or upload your own theme and activate it. Then delete the remaining themes. You can do it using the file manager provided by your hosting provider.

Open your web hosting file manager.  Access the folder where the WordPress is installed. Then you can find the installed themes in the folder wp-content \ themes. Delete the themes and keep alive the one you activated.

3. Choose Your Preferred Domain (www or non-www)

Search engines treat www and non-www versions differently. So, you have to choose your preferred domain. Both are good for SEO. But, www is good if your domain has many sub domains.

Go to Settings –> General, change the Site Address (URL) and save the changes.choose domain name

4. Change Website Title and Tagline

This is another important setting. Decide your website title and tagline and go to Settings –> General and change the default WordPress title and tagline to yours.change title and tagline

5. Change Permalinks Structure

This is the most important for SEO. The permalinks are the URLs of the blog posts and pages. A professional blog needs to have a clean permalinks structure. We have to choose a search engine friendly as well as user friendly URLs. To do so, go to Settings –> Permalinks and choose the Post name as the structure from the options given. Refer the screenshot given below.change permalinks structure

6. Change Admin Username

This is one of the main security concerns. If you have chosen the default admin username as ‘admin’, it is a risky matter. We should not reveal the admin username as to make the hackers’ job tough.

Install and activate the plugin Admin Renamer Extended. Then go to Plugins –> Admin renamer extended and change the admin username.

7. Time Zone Settings

Change the time zone to your local time. Go to Settings –> General and do the time zone settings.time zone settings

8. Change the Default Category

The default category is ‘Uncategorized’. It does not look professional. So, change the name to different name according to your blog niche. For example, if your blog deals with lots of reviews, you may change the default category to ‘Other Reviews’.

Go to Posts –> Categories, hover on the category ‘Uncategorized’ and click on Edit.Uncategorized-edit

On the next page, edit it and click on the Update button.edit-category

Also, it is better to add some categories in advance to make the selection of categories easier while editing a post.

9. Delete the Default Content

WordPress has a default post and a page. We never need them. So, we have to delete them after installing WordPress.

To delete the default page, go to Pages –> All Pages and Trash the Sample Page.trash the sample page

After trashing, it will go to the Trash folder. Click on the Trash label and then click on Delete Permanently to remove the Sample Page completely from WordPress.delete sample page permanently

Similarly to delete the default post, go to Post –> All Posts and Delete the Hello World Post.

10. Change Gravatar Image

WordPress uses the Gravatar service to show authors’ and commentators’ photos. So, if you comment on WordPress blogs, you should activate the Gravatar feature for your email to show your face. If a person commenting on your blog is not activated Gravatar for his email, the default Gravatar image will be displayed as author image. So, you can change the default Gravatar to professional looking image or custom image if your theme permits.

Go to Settings –> Discussion, scroll down the page, change the Default Avatar to Gravatar Logo and click on the Save Changes button.gravatar-settings

11. Comment Settings

Go to Settings –> Discussion and do the comment settings as given in the below screenshot.comment settings

These settings are my personal preference. You may choose an apt setting according to your wish.

12. Disable User Registration

User registration is useful when you want to accept guest posts. That means user registration is must for multi-author blogs. But, if you are the sole author, you should disable user registrations so as to prevent spam and hacking.

Go to Settings –> General and uncheck the Membership option if it is checked.disable user registration

13. Reading Settings

Go to Settings –> Reading and do the settings as given below.reading-settings
